Secreted in a forest of teak atop craggy sandstone hills 45km south of Bhopal are more than 600 rock shelters. Over 400 of these World Heritage�listed shelters contain thousands of rock paintings, the result of continuous occupation and use from the early Stone Age to medieval times.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival Bhopal - Sightseeing
Tour starts from Bhopal, the city of lakes. You will be picked up from the location of your choice in Bhopal and transferred to the hotel.
A half-day sightseeing is arranged in Bhopal. Bhopal city is also referred to as the City of Lakes because of the two beautiful lakes.
The site seen in Bhopal includes the visit to Indira Gandhi RashtriyaManavSangrahalaya and Bharat Bhawan.
Indira Gandhi RashtriyaManavSangrahalaya is a unique museum situated on a prehistoric site and the only museum in the world scattered with numerous prehistoric painted rock shelters.
You will be staying in Bhopal tonight.
Day 2 – Bhopal – Sanchi - Bhopal
This morning you will be visiting the SanchiStupas. After breakfast, we will hit the road in the morning heading towards Sanchi. On the way to Sanchi, you will pass through the town of Dewanganj, Salamatpur and other small villages.
Sanchi is 46 kms north east of Bhopal. It is unique for having the most perfect and well-preserved Buddhist stupas. The remains of Buddhist saints Sariputra and Mahamodgilya are also preserved here.
After Sanchi, you will visit Udaygiri caves, about 15 kms from Sanchi, close to the town of Vidisha. Udaygiri caves are rock-cut cave shrines, dating from 320-600 A.D.
You will come back to Bhopal in the evening and stay in Bhopal tonight.
Day 3 – Bhopal – Bhimbetka - Departure
This morning you will be visiting Bhimbetka. After breakfast, we will hit the road heading towards Bhimbetka.
Bhimbetka is a World Heritage Site and is situated south of Bhopal. This is the site of the second oldest cave paintings in the World. The location is beautiful, along the Satpura range of mountains. The area around the caves is forested, which adds to the natural beauty.
On the way, we will stop over to see Bhojpur temple. The tiny village of Bhojpur is situated on the bank of river Betwa. Bhojpur is famous for the remains of the magnificent Shiva Temple and Cyclopean dam dated 1010-53 A.D.
You will return to Bhopal in the evening.
